Graduate Engineering Training

Hands-on training programmes for graduates and new recruits

Matthews Engineering Training (MET) Ltd provides tailored training programmes to employers who recruit engineering graduates directly from universities. These training programmes provide engineering graduates with:

An intensive 3-5 week programme of practical engineering skills training

A working appreciation of those engineering skills essential to the industrial environment.

Practical instruction and hands-on training in:

  • Basic benchwork and machining.
  • Plant maintenance (mechanical and electrical).
  • Welding and fabrication methods.
  • Pipework fitting and jointing.
  • Machinery operation.
  • Measurement/control system operation and maintenance.

The training methodology

These are hands-on training courses designed to provide recent graduates with practical engineering skills to supplement their theoretical knowledge gained at university. The course objectives are designed to enable delegates to integrate more quickly into their new employer’s activities and the overall industrial environment. Core activities include:

  • UK industrial ‘Safety Passport’ qualification.
  • Benchwork, machining and fitting activities.
  • Practical engineering project work and case studies.
  • Machinery stripdown and rebuild projects.
  • Diagnosis and technical fault-finding exercises.

The venues

A feature of the MET graduate skills training is their combination of industrial venues and training premises attended during the course programme. Industrial visits are arranged to various locations for general interest and background knowledge. Graduate training activities are located at various industrial colleges and workshop facilities around the UK, depending on the discipline. Two of the industrial colleges used have specialised workshops for rotating/pressure plant and machinery training.

Delegate assessment

MET recognise the requirement of most employers to assess the skill level and engineering potential of their graduate recruits. The training programme contains close assessment of each delegate’s performance using a combination of continuous assessment and formal tests.

Course materials

Graduate delegates are provided with a full supporting package of course manuals, textbooks and reference material. The course textbooks and other material have been written by MET staff and published by The Institution of Mechanical Engineers.

Programme design and content

A typical programme extends over 4-5 weeks and is designed to accommodate up to 12 delegates with graduate or similar qualifications. Programmes can be timed to fit in with employers’ summer recruitment programmes, or may be run at other times throughout the year. Each programme consists of a number of core training modules. Additional modules can be tailored to include employers’ specific preferences, related to the nature of their engineering business.
